3.12.0-beta - Bugs in playback service rewrite

UPDATE - BETA3

Not including the bug reported by @thevenin, which I am not experiencing.

Widget bug - solved. One aspect though, which may have been in past but I didn’t notice. If, while paused, one does a rewind (or fast forward), it kicks in when play is hit, but until then it does not show in the timestamp.

Paused episode restarting at beginning afterwards - still happening but less often. Seems to be dependent on how recent it was paused and another episode listened to.

Smart Mark - still not working.

UPDATE - BETA2

Not including the bugs reported by @thevenin (thanks!), which I am not experiencing.

Widget bug - still an issue

Paused episode restarting at beginning afterwards - still happening

Local Folder items not playing - appears to be solved

Smart Mark - still not working.

FROM BETA1

Android 16 Samsung UI 8.5 (Yes - after 5 years I finally got a new phone!)

Other than the widget issue already posted, I have noticed the following issues:

  1. When I pause listening to an episode and go to another, the previous episode still shows with the beginning time of where I paused. However when I go back to restart it, it reverts to the beginning. It worked OK in the past.

  2. Items in my local folders don’t play, instead when I hit play on an item in the local folder view, the current episode in my queue plays instead! I can play the episode in the local folder using Music Player.

  3. “Smart Mark as played” not working - previous episode less than the time set still listed.

Natural to find such bugs especially after a rewrite of the playback service - but that’s what beta is for, so that the participants find the glitches before the new version goes prime-time!

I really really like what you did with what happens when a notification interrupts during listening! It’s great - hear the notification, then restart listening about a word or two before the interruption. Your choice of 800ms is perfect @bytemaster, THANKS!

Proud and happy to be helping by being a beta tester!

I can confirm that, in my case too (Google Pixel 9a), playing my local files from apps doesn’t work (whereas it works fine in the Files app, for example)

On my Moto G56, Android 16, when an episode finishes it starts again from the beginning and AntennaPod doesn’t start the following episode in queue, it re-starts the same episode. Also, automatic deletion of the episodes when playback finishes doesn’t work anymore

I’m not sure the widget issue is fully resolved. Whilst rewind/forward now work again when a podcast is actively playing, I don’t seem to be able to start one by pressing the play button, if nothing is currently playing.

Just tried - Me too!

Last Update broke notification/lock screen information (only showing the title, no author or artwork, says Unknown instead).

Bigger issue, double-tapping the play button on the headset no longer works. Play/pause works, double-tapping does nothing, it simply gets ignored (doesn’t get registered as two single-taps, so the app still knows it’s a double-tap). Tried changing the fast forward button behavior, didn’t work.

Using latest beta3 on Galaxy s10e, Android 12, using official wired headphones from Samsung.

All podcasts? Local folders or “real” podcasts? Downloaded or streaming?

Downloaded and local, I never tried streaming. If by “real” you mean downloaded within the app, then yes. I added them using the built-in search feature.

Little correction: downloaded podcasts show artwork, but don’t show the author.

Just got updated to beta 3.

  • Not sure if this was introduced in the 3.12 or was there before, but when on the home screen you tap on ‘Queue →’ it opens the queue screen but the bottom nav stays on Home.
  • I have a feeling that that play button in the miniplayer is (sometimes) slower to update (when you press play, audio starts and button state changes half a second later). Possibly due to app being single-threaded now?
  • When tapping next (in the full player) on an episode that’s playing, nothing happens (when last in queue, when next episode is being downloaded but later episodes are downloaded, and when the next episode is downloaded)
  • Now the lines are removed and rows have rounded backgrounds, I have the impression that cover images have decreased in size. I understand why and don’t see a solution, but it’s a pity.

Issue with auto-skip

Since update I’m having issue as the auto skip feature no longer works. Time is still in the setting but doesn’t skip at beginning of episodes. Works fine at the end of episodes.

Android version: 17

OS version: 6.1.162-android14-11-g5e8b0cffebd1-ab15202165
AntennaPod version: 3.12.0-beta3
Model: Pixel 8
Device: shiba
Product: shiba_beta
Manufacturer: Google

Me too. I was about to report it.

About the issues you say that happens to me too / and others that happens to me:

  • play button in the miniplayer is many times slow
  • I’m listening to a podcast, stop playing and swipe the player notification away from cellphone screen, it comes back /self activates again, again and again. (That happens only if streaming. Listening to Downloads is okay)
  • I press play on an episode and (many times) the player bar does not show instantly. It takes some more seconds.
  • When you tap on ‘Queue ->’ it opens the queue screen but the bottom nav stays on Home.

The rest of the new app version is okay (Beta3)

This is not new, it was always the case. We have to do this to deal with back button presses for users who select a page that is not home as default but still use home

For what it’s worth someone mentioned it in answering to this issue :

I also reported it and asked if another issue should be opened even though I think both problems are related.

Ever since I installed beta 3, I’ve basically been unable to listen to my podcasts; the app crashes frequently (though not always)… Although I was very pleased at the prospect of finally being able to see the list all the episodes I’d started but not finished on my Android Auto screen, and not just the one currently playing I was even thinking of dropping out of the beta programme, given that this is quite a significant issue…

It doesn’t crash for others. Please post the crash info from the “report bug” screen, so we can figure out what is different on your device.

The strange thing is that the app only stop and close without any message from the system…

AntennaPod has a “report bug” screen
