Would like to see AntennaPod integrate an option to “zap” content providers as a way of direct support. “Value for value” concept.
I support this concept of micropayments and believe that we will see more of this in the near future.
However, although it’s an interesting idea, I believe it would require a lot of effort from the developers to implement it and, as the project itself doesn’t yet accept bitcoin payments as a means of donation and most podcast content creators don’t either, I don’t see it happening.
This is true. Another obstacle for us is the uncertainty this brings to the project in terms of the app being marked (e.g. in Google Play) as ‘payment provider’. We’d need to investigate and/or get advice on these legal aspects. We’d want to avoid at all cost any additional fuss or the app being blocked because we introduce such feature. So if anyone is willing to invest time in this, that’d help a lot.
We also have this feature request in our issue tracker: Support for podcast:value tag · Issue #4671 · AntennaPod/AntennaPod · GitHub
I also wonder if there would be a legal obligation to hold user details centrally (in some legislatures around the world) which would go against the whole ethos of the nature of AP?
I would not think so, if we just allow users to use their own payment providers and pay podcasters directly. But yes, that’s one of the things that should be researched.
I would very much like to be be able to financially support the Podcasts I subscribe to. Its a good point that for a free to use app such as AntennaPod to develop such a feature would require a lot of effort
As AntennaPod (imho) is the best PodCast app available I’d like to be able to financially support it too
As a Brit, I was brought up on the BBC , which is subscription funded by an annual license fee. Thus for BBC PodCasts I have to use BBC’s ‘Sounds’ app, even though it’s not as good functionality or ease of use as AntennaPod
However for every other PodCast I am subscribed to I use AntennaPod
I’m contributing financially to the BBC content I enjoy and the app that facilitates my enjoyment, but not any other, non BBC, content. I have no objection to the free to use models (especially for those who dont have the means to provide any financial support), but for anyone who is able to afford to and wants to support both the App as well as the PodCast content providers / creators, I would very much welcome a function to ‘pay to subscribe / pay to listen’ etc
Wikipedea sometimes asks me if I would like to donate to it and sometimes (if I have the time) I do, other times I dont. I believe ‘every little helps’ so even occasional financial contributions that I do make support keeping a product/service that I value going
I think Patreon is a ‘pay to use’ Podcast provider, but I dont really want to have to use a 3rd Podcast app, just because one of them lists a proportion of the content I listen to and facilitated direct payment back to the content creators
It seems from this thread others also would like to be able to provide direct financial support to the creators of the content they enjoy (and presumably to the app they exploit to access their content?)
Hi @Paul_King !
Absolutely a lot of people would like to support both content creators and applications providers. The tricky thing with Lightning Payment is that it’s related to Bitcoin so it’s not really integrated with traditional payment methods. That being said, you can always donate directly to the content creators or contribute in other ways, as suggested on AntennaPod’s website.
edit
Typo and replaced catchy with tricky for clearer meaning
Thank you very much for your comment @OlliesGudh , very much appreciated
Sadly I don’t have any of the skills (or time) needed to support AntennaPod and as they state they dont need any further financial support, the recommendation is to support the podcast(ers) directly. It doesn’t offer guidance of how to do that though (or provide a hyperlink to and idiots guide “how to directly support your favourite podcast(s) finaically”. As an ‘idiot’ ignorant of these things that’s really what I need! Certainly not getting involved with any Crytpo-currency though)
Take care & thanks again
- Listen to their podcast episodes, including the ads
- Tell their advertisers that you appreciate their support for the podcast
- Follow the podcast on social media, and tell your friends about it on social media and elsewhere
- Become a premium subscriber if they offer the option; they may offer this through a platform like Patreon or Supercast, which may provide benefits like members-only episodes, extended episodes, advertising-free feeds, subscriber chat areas, or just the knowledge that you helped them out
Of course when in doubt relative to a particular podcast, just ask them.
For some podcasts you can also find a “support this podcast” link on the podcast info page (little info icon on the subscription page)
