Adding more plural forms?

Hey! I notice that there are some languages that have multiple plural forms (e.g. Arabic), whereas Norwegian Bokmål only has “singular” and “plural”. Is there any way for me to add more plural forms to select strings? In some cases when using Norwegian Bokmål, it is expected to write numbers as words, not digits, when 12 or below. I would like to be able to do this for some of the strings using variable numbers.

Thanks for chipping in and helping with translations! We have the same in Dutch but I’m afraid that’s not something we can control.

Weblate has a (set of) plural rule(s) per language, which we can’t change (because we use the free service hosted by them). See Language definitions - Weblate 5.14 documentation

Even if we could, it would have to be a per string setting, because in e.g. short notifications writing out the word would not be desired. We could request it as an improvement on Weblate. Do you have some examples (links to strings) where you feel it would be appropriate/better to write out the number?

Here are some strings that I imagine having a function like this would be useful (only two links, as I am a new user):

Basically any string with numbers in sentences! As you say, smaller strings may not be too necessary, especially the time-based ones that are simply “x day”, “x hour”, “x seconds”.

Thanks for those links. I think those are part of the short messages (one is a notification, the other one I’m not sure) which don’t necessarily benefit from writing out the number. Because while it would follow style recommendations, writing out the number does make it a bit more verbose.

I’m actually not sure if we have a bit longer text (e.g. a short paragraph, two sentences) which contain a number, where it would really make sense. And without it, I’m a bit hesitant to create an improvement request with Weblate because there’s so many other things they could/should be focussing on :slight_smile:

At least in German, you would expect written numbers from a book but not in the short labels of an app.

Thanks a lot for fixing the Bokmål translations! I just pulled in the changes and saw your long list of fixed typos in Bokmål. Nice!
