Am I not understanding how the queue works?

App version: 3.8.0 (095f60da8) via the Google Play Store

Hi! I’m very new to AntennaPod (coming over from PocketCasts) and I’m enjoying my experience with the app! However, I believe I am not understanding how the queue works.

I have a couple of episode filters setup within various podcasts. For example, for “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend”, I have “Exclude episodes shorter than 40 minutes” set up. I would expect episodes longer than that to download but they frequently don’t.

Another example: I have a filter on “Office Ladies” and “Exclude episodes containing any of the terms below” “second drink”. And I would expect episodes without that term be downloaded.

I don’t understand how episodes are added to my queue. Very few of them are downloaded and I have to manually hit “download” on episodes. Every few days, I have to delete the episodes I don’t want that I thought I filtered out.

This is not a new behavior but something that’s been occurring. I’m sure I’m missing a setting or some other feature.

Am I understanding these settings properly? If not, what is the queue for?

My understanding is that the “Inbox” is supposed to be where all new episodes land (downloaded or not). Once podcasts are downloaded, they are added to the queue.

By default you manually download from inbox. When downloading episodes are added to the queue.

You can use auto download, to do it you have to turn it on for each podcasts you want it auto downloading. (From subscriptions it is possible to select multiple podcasts and bulk change settings)
Beware that for it to work, episodes eligible must be in inbox. (It is planned to decouple it from inbox but I believe it is not yet) There is also a global limit in settings.

Lastly there is now a global settings you can turn on so episodes added to queue are downloaded.

Hope it will help you! Look also at the FAQ / doc, though I am not sure it’s up to date for auto download : before you had to turn it on globally, now global settings is just a global default.

I think my problem might be the automatic download feature. it wasn’t enabled. But it doesn’t explain how episodes that I filtered out land in the queue.

Thoughts on how I might fix that?

Autodownload features are in two places - globally and as mentioned before, and per subscription. Gives some fine grained control.

Filters only work if autodownload is enabled. Which might hit your “Second Drink” filter. For sure, that’s set to exclude on that subscription??

Yes. I’ll try turning on global autodownload and see if that fixes things.
