App version: x.y.z (state whether from Google Play/F-Droid/Custom built APK)
Android version: 14 (Please mention if you are using a custom rom!)
Device model: Pixel 6
Expected behaviour: when vehicle turns on, it should pull up the current podcast you are listening to, so you can start right where left off
Current behaviour: opens to the “for you” screen of other suggestions (page 2 of the app screen). If you scroll over to current it’s blank. So then you have to open the app, navigate to the queue and select the podcast and st6ay playing. Obvious bug comparing behavior of all other audio apps on Android Auto
First occurred: (e.g. about x days/weeks ago) forever since downloaded
Steps to reproduce:
This
Then that
Then this
Etc.
Environment: (Settings you have changed (e.g. Auto Download). “Unusual” devices you use (e.g. Bluetooth headphones). Did you select another media player?)
Came to to find something like this; just got Android Auto. App seems to start from scratch every time you get in the car. Will not continue from previous Android-Auto listening, will not continue from previous non-Android-Auto listening.
App should open to a “Now Playing” screen to allow you to continue were you left off in a podcast.
First occurred the first time I connected to Android-Auto.
Steps to reproduce:
Begin listening to a podcast on a non-Android-Auto Device
Stop listening to podcast
Connect to Android-Auto
See a random queue of podcasts, with no way to simply continue where you left off.
I’m on AP 3.2.0 on a Pixel 7a running Android 14 as well. For some background, I have my default page in AP set to Queue. I only have 1 episode in the queue at the moment so maybe that’s a factor…
Here is the behavior I see with Android Auto on a 2019 Kia Sorento:
Begin listening to a podcast on a non-Android-Auto Device
Stop listening to podcast
Connect to Android-Auto…
I experience the exact same. The only way to have it continued properly once connected to Android Auto is if I was playing the podcast literally right before getting in the car and establishing connection with AA.
So my example would be casting my audio to a Google Nest Mini in my home. Pause it leaving my house and getting into my car immediately starts the podcast where I was last listening. If there’s any longer break in-between listening in original peripheral device and then AA, it reverts back to For You (and it’s always the second screen available as noted by the two dots in the media screen. The first of the two screens takes you to the home screen.
In comparison, pocket casts works as expected if a counter example is needed. That’s what I use right now but would love to switch to Antenna Pod if this gets fixed!
I’m on a Pixel 7Pro, updated to current Android 14 with Feb security patch.
I think I understand what you are saying better now. I think the difference is, without thinking about it, when I want to resume a podcast I actually select AP and bring it up full screen in Android Auto, so when I do that is when it defaults to the Queue screen.
If I just start Android Auto and don’t select AP to make it full screen it does indeed default to the For You screen as you were saying.
I agree, AntennaPod’s behaviour is a bit odd with Android Auto. Every other audio app remembers if it was the last one playing and remains in the media bar at the bottom of the screen, so all I have to do is tap Play to resume playback when I next drive the car.
With AP, I have to make 3 taps to start playback (4 if you count the extra tap needed to get back to the Maps screen).
PS I know I can set it to auto-resume, but I don’t want that.
Looks like version 3.3.0 beta 2 has rolled out for some beta users. The fix for the currently playing episode on Android Auto is showing up as a new tab.
While I am against fiddling with a phone or car touch screen while driving in this case, as I understand it, the issue happens when you turn the engine on but before you set off so you can fiddle away while still parked up with the engine running. But yes, better if the the app behaved as requested in these circumstances.
Welcome to the club. While AntennaPod is an excellent app on the phone (kudos to the authors), it urgently needs some improvements on Android Auto (autoplay the latest podcast, show queue instead suggested …).
We are waiting if the new version will solve any of the problems.
