AntennaPod stop playing after few seconds when the screen turns off

First of all, Thanks a bunch for developing such a useful and great app and keeping it as Open Source… Really appreciated.

So, I’m facing a problem while playing podcasts, and it stops playing after few seconds either when the screen goes off, especially while jogging or cycling and using a Bluetooth device, or I start using another app like reading news and AntennaPod goes behind other apps.

Following are the details.

App version: x.y.z (state whether from Google Play/F-Droid/Custom built APK)

Android version: 14.x (Please mention if you are using a custom rom!)

Device model: SM-S908E/DS (Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra).

Expected behaviour: It should keep playing the media even if the screen goes off, or the app is put behind other apps.

Current behaviour: If the screen turns off or the AntennaPod goes behind other apps, it keeps playing the podcast for few seconds (Less than 1 minute), and then stops. To resume playing, if I’m using Hands-free device, I have to press the play button, while keeping the screen off, or if I’m using some other app and AntennaPOD is behind other apps, I have to bring it back to front and click the play button to resume playing. i.e. It has to be at the front and screen must not go off in order to continuously play the podcast.

First occurred: Since I have installed it, for almost 3 months.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Play the podcast.
  2. Turn the screen off, or start using any other app like reading the news from google new.
  3. It would play the podcast for few seconds and then stops.

Environment: (Settings you have changed (e.g. Auto Download). “Unusual” devices you use (e.g. Bluetooth headphones). Did you select another media player?)

I’ve never seen that or heard anyone else mention it. Are you sure that this happens merely when the screen turns off with no other apps running?

This sounds like AntennaPod is getting killed as soon as it’s out of focus. Samsungs are known to be a bit aggressive with that approach.

Yup, tested multiple times. I have also installed and tried Anytime Player (another podcast player) and YouTube Music to play some of my podcasts. But its only the AntennaPod which pauses whenever screen goes off.

Its not getting killed. It just pause or stop playing. It immediately resume playing whenever I press the play button from my handsfree device, or after turning the screen on, press the play icon from AnteenaPod player…

So, finally, I’ve found that small issue. Samsung S22 Ultra has an excellent Battery optimization feature in order to save the battery usage and by default, it tends to restrict the battery usage. AntennaPod was actually being affected of this. See the following screenshot:

Red Box: Restrict Battery Usage

is the default option, due to which if AntennaPOD is put behind other apps while playing a podcast, it would stop/pause playing its media.

Green Box: Optimize based usage …

Currently, this is the right selected solution. I’m enjoying AntennaPOD now

Thank you again for developing such a wonderful app… Appreciating and enjoying…

Best Regards…
