Auto download not auto downloading

App version: 3.9.0 - Google Play store

Android version: 13

Device model: Samsung Galaxy S20FE

Expected behaviour: The auto-download feature is not working for me, at least not as I’d expect. I subscribe to a lot of podcasts, but I only want a couple of those to automatically download. The bulk of my podcasts, I want to choose which episodes to download. I have my global Automatic Download option disabled, but the auto download feature for specific podcasts enabled. My expectation is that only the podcasts with that option enabled will download.

Current behaviour: Nothing is ever automatically downloaded.

First occurred: Not sure

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Subscribe to multiple podcasts

  2. Disable global “Automatic Download” setting

  3. Set “Include in auto downloads” to enabled

  4. Go to inbox, and pull down to refresh

  5. Notice that new podcasts are added to the inbox, but not downloaded and moved to the queue

Environment: N/A

Maybe I’m just not understanding this feature. Do I have to opt-in on the global and manually opt-out of the ones I don’t want downloaded? That seems like much more work than it needs to be.

Check in download screen how many episodes you have downloaded. Then check if it’s not already over the limit set for auto download in settings / download / auto-download.

so my Settings > Downloads > Automatic download > Episode limit is set to 25. If go to More > Downloads, there’s definitely more than that, but they’re all greyed out, which I assume means that I’ve listened to them. They all have trash can icons next to them, which I assume means that they haven’t been deleted, and are still on my phone in kind of a “played” status.

So my assumption is that while these are still there, it won’t auto-download new podcasts?

Also, if I go to Settings > Downloads > Automatic deletion, then Delete after playing is enabled, so shouldn’t these podcasts be getting removed?

Yes it won’t. You need to delete manually or increase limit.

It should. On my phone in download screen I have only not greyed episodes. Don’t know why it’s not deleted on your phone. Maybe you marked them read manually? Trying on my phone it doesn’t delete when I do.

so I went to Settings > Downloads > Automatic deletion > Delete before auto download and set it to After finishing. This seems to have fixed it. There’s no more grey podcasts on my Downloads list, and when I listened to my daily podcast this morning it was gone. So hopefully that does the trick.

I think the condition when AntennaPod can no longer download, there should be some sort of log displayed (maybe in the download screen → Download logs) of why downloads are not picking up new episodes.

I briefly talked with @ByteHamster about this today, he mentioned we should not use a notification for this because many users have notifications off.
