Auto download podcasts in queue

I’m looking to sometimes enable automatic download.

I get a lot of episodes in my inbox because I have numerous subscriptions some of my subscriptions are for newscasts where I really only want to download and listen to the most recent and others are for things like how stuff works where there are many many back episodes I’m going through.

Some podcasts I’m actually up to date on and are released only a couple of times a week. I would like those to automatically be downloaded and entered in the queue. There is a setting to automatically put them in the queue rather than the inbox but because I have automatic downloads disabled because of the news programs I don’t listen to most of the available episodes I would like the ones going directly to the queue to automatically download but I can’t seem to override the default setting which is do not download.

Under subscriptions I can queue it to the queue rather than the downloads but can’t seem to enable the download portion.

Is there a better method for me doing what I want to do or am I missing a button somewhere or is this actually a feature request?

Thanks in advance

If I read this right, I think you’d want to enable auto-downloads at the global default level - Settings, Downloads, Automatic Download, Automatic Download and set that on.

Then for one of these podcasts you don’t want it to auto-download but queue it, visit the feed settings, sure New Episodes Action is Global Default, and Include in Auto Downloads is off.

I do this with a couple news feeds, and either pull my preferred one and manually download, or choose one of the others in case my favorite isn’t available for that day/time.

I’d really like it if adding an episode to the queue also downloaded the episode. Otherwise you have to manually go in to the queue and download the episodes. It would be good if Antennapod could do things that the user wants a bit more automatically. Why would you add an episode to the queue if you didn’t want to play it? So why not download it at that point?

AntennaPod has this feature, but somehow the other way around. Instead of downloading the things you enqueue, it enqueues the things you download. This ensures that we don’t need each setting twice for both directions.

ByteHamster,

Queuing the things I download would be great, just haven’t quite figured out how to do that.

In larger context, I’m not interested in downloading most of the things I’m subscribed to. Of instance, I only really
want to download and queue the most recent of the available news podcasts that I’m subscribed to.

Because I’m (relatively/nearly) current on Ridiculous History I’d like to download and add to the queue automatically.
I’ve got global settings enable for all (subscribed) podcasts but many are set to put in inbox and have
“include in downloads” disabled, I have downloads enabled for Ridiculous history and its set to move to
the queue - however it ends up in the queue but is not downloaded.

I’m missing some setting but I’ve been unable to find what I’m looking for. Is there a document that has this
info that I’ve missed, or can someone give me the steps I need to take?

thanks,
Brian

I just click the episode’s download button from Home or InBox and the episode is automatically added to the queue and removed from the InBox. No special settings required.

Ah, as the other listener had said, I’d expected the download to be implicit if the episode was added to the play queue.
I’m already using it as designed, so no changes to be made.

Brian

So I have the current version of antennapod and beta feature enabled.

While for brief time couple of months back, the episodes I was looking for were being added to the queue rather than the inbox they did not download automatically.

At this point that is not working for me either. I’ve tried enabling Auto download and then using individual subscription settings to cue it. Conversely, I have had Auto download for all episodes disabled and then tried downloading enabling individual subscriptions to download and que.

However, neither method is providing me with any success. All episodes remain not downloaded and left an inbox for all subscriptions.

I think this works for others I think, despite the fact I believe I’ve experimented with all the options that I have overlooked something.

Would someone be kind enough to give me sufficiently detailed instructions so that I can attempt to follow them.

Thanks, much

Can you tell us what the global settings are for Automatic Downloads?

||| Menu, gear settings, downloads, Automatic download

And the download settings for the subscription where this isn’t working?

||| Menu, Subscriptions, (pick one), Gears, Include in Auto Downloads

I’ve tried a number of things but the current setting is Auto download is enabled and Auto download queued is enabled.

When I look at one of the subscription that I want to automatically queue and download. I see that. Including the auto download is enabled and automatic option which is grayed out is says put it in the inbox, download it and then cue it.

Does episode limit come into play here at all?

Confoundingly I don’t see where to tell what my version of an antenna pod is but the app store says I’m up to date.

Yes. Automatic downloads stop once you reach the limit.

“Up to date” doesn’t help because random users can get different versions. You can find the version in AntennaPod’s settings → About.

I am running version 3.8.0.

All right, let’s pick NPR News hourly report as an example. I have a lot in my inbox because they are generated hourly and I only listen to a few per day. Even if I listen to 10 per day, I’d have 14 unselected in the inbox each day.

How do I delete these?

When it comes to other podcasts, can I safely delete them from the inbox without destroying the history as far as which are played and which are pending? For instance, I want to eventually hear all the episodes of stuff you missed in history class. So I want to be able to maintain the played verse unplayed history.

Thank you very much for your support.

I just swipe-left (or right) in the Inbox to remove the ones I won’t be listening to. You can also use Multi Select to delete several at a time if you prefer.

Yes. When you look at the individual podcast subscriptions you’ll see all episodes listed and it’s clear which ones you have listened to.

I was able to use multi-select and filtering but I was not then able to find the delete button.

What I did find that’s probably crucial is that while removed from queue after plague was set, delete after play was not so that cleared up a whole bunch of stuff that was not showing unless I looked under the download button.

It’s wait and see till I get a new episode that I want to automatically cue. But if the length of q is preventing automatic downloads but allowing manual downloads, that was probably the issue.

I will let everyone know how it actually works out for me. In the meantime, I want to thank everybody who wrote back with recommendations.

I discovered (something you already knew) the delete after play is a menu and not a button, I clicked that
and set delete enable.

Global new episode action is add to queue.
Automatic download and download queued are both enabled.

  • Episode limit is set to 25 - I’m not clear if that is total episodes or per podcast/subscription, that this may be
my issue. Because I download a month at a time (2-3 episodes per week for several subscriptions that I’m years
behind on) I may be at the limit and not auto downloading AND queuing episodes that I am caught up on and
    only expecting the new release.

Wait - stupid me, set that to 100 and will see what happens over the next day or so.

Delete after play is enabled.

For specific podcasts I have include in auto download - enabled as well as seeing that New episode actions are
(greyed out) add to inbox, download and then move to queue – this is what hasn’t been working for me.

And for subscriptions I’m really behind on - auto downloads “disabled” and action is “add to inbox”, Which is
what seems to occur for all.

Maybe it was the episode limit… I’ll let you know what I discover.

If any of the above settings are wrong based on what I’m hoping for please let me know.

thanks,
Brian

My auto download and queuing issue has been fixed.

As I think some of you suspected removing from queue after play is not the same as deleting after play. That was a problem and the global limit on downloads is global and not podcast.

Things are now working as I would expect them to

Thanks for the input from everybody who’s written me over the last couple of months. I realize my testing was sporadic and I appreciate your sticking with me.

Looking forward to sticking with antennapod for a long time to come.

Thank you
