Automatic Download: Appears to have stopped working

Environment

Android version: 16
OS version: 6.6.77-android15-8-31998796-abogkiS938BXXS6BYIF-4k
AntennaPod version: 3.9.0
Model: SM-S938B
Device: pa3q
Product: pa3qxeea

No crash report recorded

Expected behaviour:

Podcasts in my Inbox are automatically downloaded

Automatic Download –> Automatic Download is on and Download when not charging is on.

Downloads –> New episodes action is set to “Add to Inbox”

I don’t have any subscription specific rules, all use global rules

Current behaviour:

Podcasts in my Inbox have to be manually downloaded

First occurred: 2/3 days ago

Steps to reproduce:

  1. In Download screen pull down the application to refresh
  2. Inbox has podcasts added to it
  3. Podcasts are not automatically downloaded

Environment: No changes to Application setting for weeks before this issue started. No big security downloads from Samsung in the past week but it would have had changes pushed by the Play Store or Samsung Store.

I’ve deleted and redownloaded the application and that did not fix the issue

I don’t think I am the only person

Crash info: No crash info

I have the space on the phone for the download as the manual download works fine when I tap the screen.

Same issue.

App Stopped Auto-downloading and Auto-Queuing

If I was to hazard a guess, it’s because I starred a couple episodes. Starred episodes aren’t auto-deleted. This seems to have stopped/broken the auto-downloading and auto-queuing logic.

All the new episodes are just hanging out in the Inbox awaiting manual review.

I don’t think that I have starred any episodes

I’ve found the option of “Add to favourites” but I have not seen\found a way to see my favourites to see if I have added anything by accident.

Also I have deleted and reinstalled the application, changed the settings:

  • Automatic Download –> Automatic Download is on and Download when not charging is on
  • Downloads –> New episodes action is set to “Add to Inbox”

And it did not work this morning. Not sure if starred episodes would be within the export details (which I imported) but I am confident I have not starred anything since the reinstall of the application.

If you can advise where to see starred episodes much appreciated and thank you for the response.

To see starred:

More→ Episodes → click on the star :star: at the top (it’s a toggle)

I admit, this took me a long time to figure out as well!

Thanks, for the reply,

On checking I have no starred episodes.

Hi. New here, and new to AntennaPod (just installed yesterday). I’m wondering if this is my problem, too. I want AntennaPod to automatically download new episodes of my subscribed podcasts and automatically place them in my queue. So far it is just leaving them in my inbox, from which I have to manually download. Can someone tell me: IF the app were working right, what settings do I need to have on (and which off) to make it do what I want?

I feel these are the settings (in settings):

  • Automatic Download –> Automatic Download is on (I also do Download when not charging is on just in case)

  • Downloads –> New episodes action is set to “Add to Inbox”

I’ve looked at previous times this was reported as a problem and these seem to be what people were told to check.

If you think you have the same issue you might want to leave your phone details

  • Settings –> Report Bug –> Copy to Clipboard

Just so if there is a bug people can see if it is specific to a phone\brand etc.

The most likely reason is that you have more episodes downloaded than the episode limit configured in the settings. Check the number of episodes that are downloaded. (Not the number of episodes in the queue. Episodes can be downloaded without being in the queue. Check the downloads screen)

Thank you.
I have a brand-new Pixel 10 Pro (I’ll report this as a bug as you suggest, if the problem persists).

@ByteHamster - that is the crux of the bug.

I have several episodes starred, which will NOT be deleted by the auto-deleter. Previously, my auto-delete settings would delete episodes to make space for incoming new episodes. But because I have a couple starred episodes, the auto-deleter just stops/fails rather than skipping over the starred episodes and deleting newer episodes.

So the bug here is in the auto-deleting logic. It should skip over starred episodes rather than just giving up when the oldest episodes are starred.

Can you please look into the logic of the auto-deleter?

@stephensmith999

yes, it should. But you need to have the following settings set:

  1. Move incoming episodes from Inbox to Queue.

  2. Auto-download queued episodes.

  3. Auto-delete older episodes to make room/space for incoming episodes.

How many starred episodes do you have and what is the limit for downloaded episodes that you have in the settings? If you have more starred than the limit, you have to increase the limit for auto-download to download more. That’s because you then expect if to download more than the limit

I have 4 starred. My download limit is 100.

What did you select in “delete before auto-download” and how many episodes do you have downloaded (look at the downloads screen, not at the queue)

Set to “when not favorited”.

I’m not sure how to determine how many episodes are downloaded. There’s no number. But it shouldn’t matter anyway because it should delete the downloads

Hi, this was my problem, thanks for the solution.
