I’ve just installed this app on my android phone (Samsung S24) but new episodes aren’t being downloaded automatically. Can someone advise me how to set this up - and for the new episodes to be added to the queue?

There’s two settings in particular. Have you found these since you posted?
Settings | Downloads | Automatic download
There’s a radio button setting
Each subscription has it’s own ability to download or override the app settings…
Subscriptions | (open one up) | Settings gear | Include in auto downloads
