Automatic download not working

Hey all,

hope someone could support me, I have no clue what else to try to make automatic downloads work :face_with_spiral_eyes:

In general, all new podcast episodes pop up in the inbox.
But 5 Podcasts are individually set to go directly into the queue. For these 5 podcasts, automatic download is activated.
They end up in the queue but are not downloaded.

I activated up to 100 episodes to be kept in the downloads (and Iā€™m not there yet), download over mobile data is activated. I activated download while in battery mode.

And itā€™s not working. Every morning, I have to click on each episode to download it.

Any hint what I might not see?

Thank you very much!

I think you should let episodes in inbox which is where auto download look to trigger a download.
So itā€™s probably not working because when you move episode to queue there is nothing left in inbox to be auto downloaded.

Thatā€™s an intersting thought.
I just changed the settings for 2 of the 5 podcasts and will double check tomorrow morning if they behave differently. :slightly_smiling_face:

Unfortunately it did not work.
3 episodes ended up in the queue not being downloaded and 2 stayed in the inbox, not downloaded as well.

Maybe any other ideas what I have maybe missed?

Thank you :slightly_smiling_face:

Iā€™ve been having a similar issue. Auto download does not work unless the option to add new episodes to queue is checked. It wasnā€™t like this before the 3.4 update. Also not getting notifications when new episodes have been downloaded either.

Next Update:

I changed the general setting from

  • all new episods into inbox
    to
  • all new episodes into queue

And this morning, the 5 new episodes are in the queue and downloaded. Thumbs up.

BUT: All the other podcasts new episodes are (of course) in the queue and downloaded too.
Thatā€™s not helpful in my case :expressionless:

Therefore my question again, is it possible to select the following:

In general, all new episodes are going into the inbox. They are not automatically downloaded.
But for 5 podcasts, new episodes are going into the queue and are downloaded automatically.

Thanks in advance for any hint

Isnā€™t it what it does if auto download is not on for podcasts you donā€™t want it to automate ?

Iā€™m not too clear on your settings but it sounds like you want to do the same things Iā€™m doing. Some pods I always want their episodes into the queue and downloaded and ready to go. So hereā€™s how Iā€™m set up. In settings for AntennaPod, in the Automatic download section I have Automatic download turned on. My episode cache is set to 25 but you can set yours to whatever works. Episode cleanup is set to ā€˜When not in queueā€™. Thatā€™s it for the general app settings.

Now for each pod, you want to click on the settings gear. In here, I have the following set for the pods I want every episode to download and enqueue:

New episodes action: Add to queue
Include in auto downloads: On

If Iā€™m following correctly, you already have things set this way but just want to be sure.

You said:

In general, all new episodes are going into the inbox. They are not automatically downloaded.
But for 5 podcasts, new episodes are going into the queue and are downloaded automatically.

I have this working this way, albeit with a handful more pods. You must have a rogue setting somewhere. If not, I guess itā€™s possible your database or settings might be corrupt somehow. You could always try exporting your database and OPML file, clearing cache and data for AntennaPod in your Android settings and starting over, then import your OPML file and redo some of these settings. If that still doesnā€™t do it, you could just reimport your database and continue trying to figure it out. If your listening stats donā€™t matter at all to you then just exporting and importing your OPML file really should take care of it after an app reset.

I would say just be aware that if the listening stats matter to you at all then beware of this process. Reimporting the database should take care of getting them back but if itā€™s corrupt for some reason there could be other unforeseen issues reimporting.

This does not work. You can either have auto-download or add to the queue. This is currently not reflected in the UI. Note that auto-download adds to the queue as well, so you donā€™t need to enable ā€œadd to queueā€

Ok thanks for that info. When AP was having some trouble with streaming episodes a couple months back I switched to downloading. I guess before I was downloading this was how I was automatically adding those episodes to my queue from the Inbox. I guess it is sort of obvious because sometimes Iā€™ll add a show either from my pods or from scrolling through old episodes and downloading it puts it in the queue. But as you know Iā€™m brainless sometimes lol.

Hey there,
thank you very much for your long and detailed answer. Itā€™s very appreciated that you invest so much time in this

From what I understand from your settings, I can agree that I might have the same settings as you have but itā€™s not working.
And you got the point correctly: I want to be ā€œready to goā€ with those 5 (news) podcastsā€¦ Opening AntennaPod in the morning, let the download/queue routine do itā€™s thing and be sure I have these episodes ready to hear in the subway.

In the morning, Iā€™m always connected to wi-fi and canā€™t see how this prevents the app to work this way.
But again, thanks for your answer!

Ooooooh :flushed:
Auto-download adds the episodes automatically to the queue?
I wasnā€™t aware of it.
Iā€™ll give it a try and see if the pocasts will end up in the queue automatically if auto-download is activated for them. If so, my issue would be solved.
Will let you know if it worked. Thanks for the hint!

I think my issue is similar to OPā€™s. Auto download does not work unless the add to queue option is also turned on. If add to queue is turned off, new episodes show up under the podcast, but do not download.

Good news first: for the 5 podcasts it works fine! I activated auto download and they are pushed to the queue automatically :+1:
That was exactly my initial request.

But: If I download an episode manually from the inbox, it getā€™s to the queue too. I donā€™t like it.
Is there any setting to make sure automatic downloads end up in the queue but manual downloads only appear under ā€œdownloadsā€?

Thanks!

Iā€™m glad to hear that the auto download is working as desired.

Please help us understand the reason for wanting manual downloads to not be placed in the queue.

Thank you for your answer :slightly_smiling_face:
So, here is how I would like to use the app:

I follow around 30 Podcasts.
Every day, some new episodes are pushed into my inbox.
Some are interesting - and I hit the download button
Some are lame - and get swiped right away.

The ones I download should end up in the download folder. Itā€™s my collection box for episodes Iā€™d like to hear when I have time. Could be tomorrow, could be in some months.

In the queue I have my 5 daily podcasts (thatā€™s working now) and only those I started already and they need to be finished.

If all (the started and the not started ones) end up in the queue, I lose overview.

Hope this makes sense somehow.

ā€¦ basically Iā€™m looking for a feature that allows auto-downloaded episodes to the queue and the manual downloaded not.

Thank you very much for your answer.
We might have a misunderstanding here. The automatic download works now with the current settings I made :slightly_smiling_face:

Up through that point, thatā€™s exactly what my flow looks like too.

Thatā€™s the part I still have trouble understanding, since downloads take up a lot of space on your phone. Doesnā€™t it make more sense to leave the someday/maybe episodes in the Inbox instead of downloading them? (Regardless of whether they are displayed in the queue.)

I understand your confusion :slightly_smiling_face:
The thing is, that Iā€™m often in areas with a bad network connection. Therefore Iā€™d like to have the ā€œwhen I have timeā€ podcasts on my phone already.
Youā€™re right, it takes some space but itā€™s not that crazy much and Iā€™m willing to reserve the space for the podcasts.

Hope that helps to get my point better.
