First of all, I am very happy that AntennaPod has an own forum. I changed from Spotify to AntennaPod some time ago and I find AntennaPod superior. Since a few weeks I have the problem that I describe below. I am not sure if this is a problem of AntennaPod or if the problem belongs to the podcasts themselves. This is why I first wanted to ask this community. Maybe some other members have similar problems.
I hope I managed to describe the problem properly.
I am looking forward to your answers!
Thanks a lot!
App version: x.y.z (state whether from Google Play/F-Droid/Custom built APK)
Android version: 7.0 (Please mention if you are using a custom rom!)
Device model: Samsung Galaxy S6
Expected behaviour:
The app should be able to stream all podcasts, as long as they are online and I have WiFi-access.
Current behaviour:
The app does not stream some podcasts. I get the message that the media file could not be played. When I check the website information of the podcasts, the episodes are online and I can stream them via the browser but not via AntennaPod.
First occurred: (e.g. about x days/weeks ago)
First occured some weeks ago with one podcast, then more and more podcasts become affected.
Steps to reproduce:
I choose a problematic podcast, select an episode and click the streaming button.
Environment: (Settings you have changed (e.g. Auto Download). “Unusual” devices you use (e.g. Bluetooth headphones). Did you select another media player?)
No, as far as I know I did not change the environment.
I notice that you’ve got an older phone, suggesting that it may be getting low on storage. You might want to make sure you’re deleting podcasts after listening - and of course check the phone’s available storage.
Yes, my phone is indeed getting old but as far as I can see there is enough storage left.
Also, I only stream episodes on AntennaPod. Does AntennaPod save any kind of data in my phones storage even if I only use it for streaming?
Actually, it does, though not a lot. For example, it stores the podcast episode thumbnail images. One clue that your storage is getting low is that episode thumbnails may start to disappear.
Okay, I checked the relevant podcasts but did not notice disappearing thumbnails.
I will check the storage to make sure that it is not a problem of storage space :-).
Yes, you are right. This is the error message (translated from German) with what I already checked/did/want to do in italic:
"Error
The media file could not be played.
Try deleting the episode and downloading it again. → I did not download the episodes but tried to stream
Check the network connection and make sure that no VPN or login page is blocking access. → I have WiFi access and we did not change the WiFi settings
Long tap on the episode and share the “media address” with your web browser to see if it can be played there. → I tried this and had no difficulties streaming the episodes via the website of the podcats. If not, contact the creators of the podcast. → This would be my next step
“Handshake failed” sounds like there is something wrong with the network connection. Try downloading instead of streaming. Try to disable your VPN etc, everything that could mess with the network connection.
I tried to download an episode from a problematic podcast - no problem, I could play the episode. But streaming is still impossible.
Strangely (at least from my point of view :-)) this problem does not occur with all my podcasts but only three of them. I am able to stream and download the episodes of the other podcasts without diffculties.
