Can't remove Antennapod from Status Bar

Hi! Before I file a bug, I’ll ask here if there is a solution to this. This problem always nagged me in Antennapod and I haven’t found a solution yet except restarting the fone.

Android version: 14

Device model: Motorola edge 30 neo

Expected behaviour:
Postcast should not be visible on any status screen when not active.
At least that bubble should have an X where you can close that insert.

Current behaviour:
Antenna Pod is adding a big picture to the status bar.

First occurred: (e.g. about x days/weeks ago)
Always has been.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open Antenna pod and start a podcast
  2. finish or stop your podcast
  3. use the gesture top down to get the view with our options (Bluetooth etc.)
  4. Antenna Pod still is visible on the bottom.

Hi that’s your os or settings app on Android, it does that, holds whatever was last played.
Swipe it and turn off notifications if you don’t like it.
I use it to skip commercials from drop down so I don’t have to leave whatever other app I’m using.
As annoying as useful…
That’s not an antenna thing…
Aloha

That’s the problem: I can’t just swipe it.
Antenna pod seems to prevent that this insert can be swiped or closed.

For example I am also using Folder Player which shows a insert there. You can swipe this away and it even has a close button.
But Antenna Pod locks itself there, so it definately is an Antenna thing!

This is indeed an Android setting. Android settings app → Sound+Vibration → Media → Pin media player

Thanks, but this setting didn’t change anything.

Also I wonder why I don’t have this problem with all the other media players I use.

For me it seems that Antennapod always stays active. It is not possible to swipe or close, so it might be something with the activity settings of Antennapod.

We explicitly added support for pinning the notification. This means that the Android system can show AntennaPod’s notification even when AntennaPod is not running (this is the simplified explanation). Looks like your other apps do not support this feature.

Because it is the Android system showing the notification, not AntennaPod, it needs to be turned off in the Android system settings that I mentioned above.

I told you that I already changed the setting you mentioned, but it did not make any difference. I even restarted the phone after changing the setting, but no change.

As example I attached a screenshot how it looks like with folder player. There you have this off button (red arrow) which will close and remove the media player there. Maybe it would simply be an option to add such a button to Antennapod too.

I’d recommend disabling “Persistent playback controls” in AntennaPod’s user interface menu if you haven’t already

Thank you very much, this solves my problem!

However, maybe you might considering adding this off-button like folder player does, because it gives you the choice to remove the player, even if you have the persistant control enabled.

I think @Flexmaen is actually highlighting (even if not explicitly) an AntennaPod behaviour which I also find not ideal.

Relevant settings (Android and AP):

  • Pin media player: off
  • Persistent playback controls: on

My use case is: I would like to keep seeing my media controls when I pause playback. However, I would also like them to disappear when I close the app (as opposed to keeping it open in the background). Spotify behaves exactly that way.

Of course I could disable persistent playback controls, but then they would disappear as soon as I pause playback, which doesn’t meet my use case either.

@loucasal Thank you very much, you are exactly pointing out what I’m trying to say!
I was not aware of all the options, but I was confused becuase the default behaviour of AntennaPod is different to other media players we know (like Spotify or Folder Player). Also it seems that it doesn’t provide our use case at all.

So let’s think about a solution.
How about:

  • Persistent playback controls = off by default.
  • adding “off” button (like in the screenshot with Folder player)
  • pause button won’t remove AntennaPod anymore, this can be done with off-Button.

What do you think about that?

If you set pin=off and persistent=on, you get exactly what you asked for (instead of a “remove” button, use swiping). Note that after swiping, you have to close the notification bar. If you immediately swipe up to get it back, it will still be there. That seems to be the reason why you initially thought that the pin=off setting had no effect.

I agree with you we don’t need any extra UI elements, we just need the behaviour to match the user’s expectations.

If I have already closed the app, having to also swipe away the media player feels tedious and redundant.

My assumption is that if I intend to resume listening soon, I would never close the app (why would I do so?).

@ByteHamster You’re right. If I don’t close it then it will get stuck and you can’t swipe it away unless you close it.

I think there still might be room for improvement, since I don’t seem to be the only one who finds this less intuitive than in other apps.

But your answers helped me not getting nagged by re-appearing AntennaPod bubble anymore, thanks!
