Changes to Subscription tab?

Hi, I’m not seeing in the patch notes what changed about the Subscriptions page. Before, tags were listed as icons in the same grid as individual podcast feeds, and now they’re in a row at the top. I’m still new and figuring out how I want to customize the app, so forgive me if I’m missing something here. I joined after Pocket Casts added their own ads, and I really appreciate this project!

Yes they moved to the top because a lot of users had trouble understanding how to make the grid work

Thank you, I’m still figuring that out myself. I’m still missing arbitrary sorting as an option for the Subscriptions page, but I see it’s been requested before. Folders are an imperfect replacement IMHO.

I don’t understand the point of tags if users cannot use them to sort, view, filter, customize screens (eg, Home or view upon opening app)… To marginalize (literally) the only real tool users have to choose the hierarchy of pods in their subscriptions–ie, so that it appears as a ticker tape above default categories (defaults that i do not use and do not need to see)– makes this tool all but useless. Having to scroll across the top is a way to kill “tags” as a feature. I would like my main screen to look the way it used to look, with the main page pods in a grid and tagged “folders” below.

If you have specific suggestions on how to make it better (instead of just “revert to how it was before”), please let us know. As described above, this change was necessary because many users did not understand the old way it was displayed. Especially the “show in main list” setting caused confusion because it mixed tags and subscriptions in the same list. Also, users found it cumbersome to have them at the bottom because you then have to scroll past the top-level subscriptions to see the tags. Finally, having them in that horizontal row prepares for being able to filter more screens by tag instead of just the subscriptions screen, making tags way more powerful.

Even though the change breaks your workflow, the change likely works better for the majority of users. So we need to tweak the new UI to accomodate your workflow instead of just reverting back and breaking it for others.

Maybe users should be able to add subscriptions to folders. It seems a lot of complains come from tags used as folder.

So for subscriptions users could :

  • Tag them for filtering purpose : current implementation
  • Move them to a folder : same as previous implementation except that
    • It would only be possible to set a subscription to a unique folder
    • subscriptions won’t show outside their folder if one has been set (removing option that was hard to understand previously)
    • folders would always be listed first so it’s the same as browsing files with a file explorer on PC

But maybe it would add a lot of overhead and futur maintenance?

Perhaps a Show All Tags button at the beginning of the horizontal row is the answer?
