OK, after some more digging in I think I found that it was just removed:

Users disable the setting and then wonder why other apps (like Android Auto) do … not display the cover image, even though it says so in the setting summary.

Didn't notice it until coolwalk. But looking into old pictures, this problem exists at least since last year
### Steps to reproduce
Play any episode when connected to Android Auto. It can either have an episode art or just podcast art. It doesn't matter.
### Expected behaviour
A cover art, like the one shown in app, will be shown on the screen

It’s kinda sad that the setting was removed - I don’t even have a car and don’t care about Android Auto so not being able to remove the background from the media notification is highly inconvenient.
While I understand motivation to simplify the settings to make the app easier maybe hiding some settings behind some mechanism (see “developer mode” after tapping on version) and disclaimer “if you change any of those settings don’t complain”) would be a way?
