Episodes loops instead of playing next in queue

## Environment
Android version: 17
OS version: 6.1.157-android14-11-gbd23337e42e7-ab14791245
AntennaPod version: 3.12.0
Model: Pixel 6
Device: oriole
Product: oriole
Manufacturer: Google

App version: 3.12.0

Android version: 17

Device model: Pixel 6

Expected behaviour: Play next episode in queue

Current behaviour: loop episode unless skip is hit

First occurred: about a week ago

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Add up to two episodes of any podcast
  2. Click play on first one
  3. Hit Pause
  4. Drag second one to first slot in queue
  5. Hit play on the one which is now in first slot, second slot is now paused and first slot is playing
  6. Episode ends and then loops. Both entries have this issue.
  7. All files played now have this issue.

Environment: Default Settings

Crash info: No crash.

All files inherit this bug and will not play even when the queue is empty or there is one file in queue. Loop or repeat function does not exist hidden inside any buttons. Playback loops forever instead and is disruptive. I can’t fiddle with my phone if I’m driving.

If there is some hidden loop function, I can’t find it to disable it.

Pixel 7 pro, android 17. Instead of moving to next item in queue when previous item has completed playing, the item just completed will replay from the start again. This will happen continuously until manual intervention.

I just made an account to click the me too button. I thought I was going crazy when the “next” episode started exactly like the one I just finished.

Indeed there is not. I’m no developer but my gut feeling would be that this has to do with the fact that you drag the queue items around. I’ll see if I can reproduce.

I just tried this in my daily version of the app with this test feed: Subscribe – AntennaPod

I had to disable Smart mark as played and disable ‘keep sorted’ in the queue sorting. I followed the steps you indicated Midnight but it didn’t reproduce. I’m on AntennaPod 3.12 on Android 16.

Based on your description you must be manually sorting the queue. Does the issue of repeating episode audio go away if you sort e.g. by date, then use ‘keep sorted’ and play episodes?

And I’m also wondering: I have Settings → Downloads → Automatic deletion → Delete after playing enabled. How do you have this setting?

And another question: is it only the audio that repeats or does really the same entire episode repeat? In other words: when it’s repeating, is the info in the player screen correct (in line with the audio you’re hearing)?

I am having the same issue, started for me in the last few days

Same issue, but not consistently.

AntennaPod version: 3.12.0 (980b2f32d)

Pixel 9

Android 17

Same issue.

The only time it didn’t do it was when I was listening over the phones speaker rather than Bluetooth…

I’ve experimented with different inputs and it works fine without peripherals. Phone audio is okay.

Peripherals seem to induce the issue. Bluetooth especially. My car causes it the most. It simply doesn’t remove the download, skips to next downloaded episode (which is the same thing that just played) and continues playback.

It wasn’t reordering the queue like I thought. Try using different Bluetooth devices and you might get what I’m reporting.

Oh and I tried both with and without your suggestions on phone audio and the issue isn’t replicated.

It’s only on Bluetooth that the issue begins to manifest. That seems to be the variable to isolate for further study.

I graded down to the former version and the problem disappears.

So this is a problem with the 3.12 Version.

@H_P Can you confirm (for your case) the conclusion from others that this is exclusively happening when connected with a (bluetooth) device?

Sorry. I can’t. I haven’t tested it to see if it’s only in wireless mode.

Have the same problem since last Saturday. So it is probably caused by the latest update.

I’m using AntennaPod on a Samsung S22 and playing podcasts with Bluetooth in my car. Every episode is looped instead of starting the next episode form the queue. The option that it should go forward is active in the preferences. Unfortunately with Google playstore it is not possible to revert to the last working version. :frowning:

Same problem. Big probability it has something with ordering a queue. After phone restart it seems to work ok, as long as I don’t add new episodes to/order a queue.

Also tested different aged Bluetooth peripherals and it doesn’t seem to be higher incidence based on age.

Further testing required but I feel I’ve been through enough that the developers can look into it. See what precisely is happening in the code that might be causing the bug.

Further experimentation shows it has a 100% incidence rate in cars. Tried in 2017 Subaru, 2019 Honda, 2020 Toyota, 2020 Chevrolet, and 2021 Dodge vehicles. All triggered the issue. Reverted versions, not present.

Bluetooth headphones also have a high % incidence rate. If anything interfaces with Bluetooth, it has a chance to happen. Which increases depending on peripheral. Revert version, incidence rate is 0%.

Whatever is wrong is the current version and it’s Bluetooth functionality that’s causing the issue. Something isn’t telling the program to remove the episode from queue. If you just naked play an episode, no queue, it doesn’t happen.

Would need people with 2024-2026 vehicles to test and see if it’s older systems having an incompatibility or something else. But I’m out of ideas for what to do next.

Just to add to, I have a Toyota of 2016. So this would match to what you have written.

I haven’t experienced this issue at all, including in a 2014 Mazda.
FYI: I drag things around in my queue, but haven’t enabled any kind of Sort in the queue.

Are you using app version 3.12?
