How to use while driving?

App version: 3.8.0 from Google Play

Android version: 15

Device model: Pixel 8

Expected behaviour:

Current behaviour: I set my Pixel to be my media player in my car (2018 VW Passat), and it plays. But it doesn’t skip forward or back when I use the steering wheel controls. Sometimes the audio ducks (gets softer) for no apparent reason and comes back when I pause/play.

How do people use this in a car? I can’t always switch to the UX away from Google Maps to pause/play/skip, and I don’t want to look away from the road when my thumb is on the skip forward button.

First occurred: always

I use a quick tile or whatever they are called, and AntennaPod is placed at number four (2nd row, right). Thus I can stop/start from a single swipe down. I can do it without looking. However, in my state, probably not legal.

Does the same happen for other media player apps you have used or just AP?

I had a Pixel 8 Pro (and currently a Pixel 9 Pro) and both have worked fine with my Mazda’s steering wheel controls. I agree that looking away from the road to change between apps is bad, so I don’t.

Do you mean you swipe down from the top of the screen like this? I think this is called the Notification Shade. Seems doable but not perfect.

Up until 2 days ago I used the Castro app on an iPhone. This app (when it worked) supported skip forward/backward and everything I needed, and I didn’t have to switch apps because it was on a 2nd phone  I was hoping to trim my travel budget to one phone with cell service, and I love the idea of an open source Android app, so I wanted to give AntennaPod a try.

Almost. If you do two swipes down, a pencil will appear between Modes and the Notification. From there you can move up the Anntenna Pod to be one of the top four. Mine is in the position of your Modes

Ah, thanks! I didn’t know AntennaPod had a quick tile. Seems it only pauses and plays, but it does seem pretty easy to hit without looking too hard.
