Hi all,
FOSDEM 2025 is coming up! Some other people in the podcasting-FOSS domain will be on-site, including myself. So I was thinking: why don’t we take the opportunity to meet up and discuss how we can get good, privacy-respecting podcast listening statistics, which could also be used for discovery/redommendations?
Apple Podcasts was down or changed their API at a point, which caused some questions: New User: Problem, selecting ‘Add Podcast’ gives error? Not in the least: what to do if Apple Podcasts does indeed drop or goes off-line. A PR was quickly drawn up to make our Discover section rely on Podcast Index: Perform toplist discovery using PodcastIndex by ByteHamster · Pull Request #7480 · AntennaPod/AntennaPod · GitHub That proved to be a less-than-ideal solution.
I think at least @ByteHamster and @benjaminbellamy would be up for a chat on the topic.
FOSDEM offers several BoF rooms/slots to have such conversations, so let’s ask for one so we can brainstorm together!
What's a BoF?
BoF stands for ‘Birds of a Feather’. Apparently it comes from the IETF, who describe it as
initial discussions about a particular topic of interest
In the context of the IETF, it is in preparation of a Working Group which in turn is there to create a new standard. The BoF it’s the space to define the problem and milestones, and to make sure that there’s enough folks who want to work on the topic.
In the context of FOSDEM, the scope is slightly wider:
These rooms are intended for ad-hoc discussions, meet-ups or brainstorming sessions
When we request a space, we can indicate preferred timeslots. Any preferences? (Saturday at 12:00 seems available still in AW, which I think is a nice location because it’s easier to find than the other rooms).
