Questions from a recently ex-PocketCast user

App version: 3.9.0 - Google Play

Problem you may be having, or feature you want:

Ive been using antennapod for about a week now, and there is a podcast flow that just doesn’t feel right yet. I don’t like that marking a podcast as played, removing it from inbox, removing it from q, and ‘archiving’ are all distinct options. Also, when listening to a podcast, I very much miss the ‘mark as played’ button to note ‘i’m done with this one.’

I find the workflow to be significantly less optimal then PC.

If anyone has any config tips to make it behave much more like PC, id appreciate any tips! Cheers.

What I think , as a FR here is the following:

  1. In the ‘now playing’ podcast screen, there should be a button to mark as played, remove from q, & archive all in one motion.
  2. In any of hte other swipe actions for any screen, once you mark as played, it should do the same, ie: Remove from Q, remove from inbox, and mark as archived. (and ofc, delete the file if downloaded).

Thanks.

Any suggestions?

I’m also a former PocketCast user fleeing before the adpocalypse. I do miss the ‘archive’ button as a one stop shop to remove a podcast from all lists but I have found a few workarounds to mostly replicate how I used the PocketCasts ‘archive’ (although there are a couple of extra steps)

  1. Now playing screen - If you use the ‘Skip episode’ button you can configure that to mark the episode as played and remove it from the queue (Settings >> Playback >> Queue >> Unselect ‘Keep skipped episodes’) and delete the episode if it’s downloaded (Settings >> Downloads >> Automatic Deletion >> Select ‘Delete after playing’)
  2. Delete download and remove from queue (Settings >> Download >> Automation >> Select ‘Delete removes from queue’) - This will obviously remove from queue and delete the download at the same time (although you would still have to separately mark the episode as played)
  3. Remove from Inbox and mark as played - I only just found out this morning under another topic that if you long press an episode in the inbox you can select ‘mark as played’, which should also remove it from the inbox as well (although again if you’ve auto-downloaded the episode you’d have to delete it separately)

The main limitation seems to be that there is no setting to auto-delete an episode that is manually ‘marked as played’, these are two distinct actions. As I mainly stream podcasts, that’s not much of an issue for me, but if you mostly download your podcasts there are a couple of extra steps involved here unfortunately.

Hi Fuzzy, Yes, Ive come to the same conclusion as you. So I hope as a FR they would consider a setting that ‘mark as played’ will take all the above actions, from any screen - delete if downladed, and remove from q and/or inbox. I think that would really fix the episode management .

Hopefully the powers that be would be interested in this fix/change.

Cheers.

I came from PodkickerPro, for much the same reasons and I also find the plethora of menus confusing. This is what I have previously posted…

That is basically how I work, though I don’t auto-download. I also don’t stream. I only need 3 panels:

  • Subscriptions: feeds where I am looking for new episodes

  • Episodes: new episodes that are available from my Subscriptions

  • Queue: Episodes that I have chosen to download and that I will probably listen to

I have no idea how I would use the Downloads, Inbox, Home or Playback History panels. I do not even look at these.

But this is a great app! HTH

I believe you’re referring to the Home Screen’s five panels. You’ll be happy to know that you can click the triple-dot menu at the top of the home screen and click “Configure Home Screen.” Just drag the ones you don’t want from “Shown” to “Hidden”.

Thanks for the insight, but I don’t use the Home Screen, so I would not even have seen the possibility. I use the top left Hamburger menu and have reordered the sections to Episodes (1), Queue (2) and Subscriptions (3). So, I can see what is new Episodes from my Subscriptions and download what I want to listen to. Then I can listen to what I downloaded from the Queues list. With auto-delete-on-listen enabled everything works for me.

I also LOVE the Refresh function from the long-press on the AntennaPod icon, particularly with my Default Page as Episodes.

That is all I need for my workflow, which may not be everyone’s solution.

Fantastic app, with tons of customization to handle everyone’s workflow!

It always easier to modify your own usage pattern than to push for changes to something that most users don’t have an issue with.

This sounds like you download but never delete the downloaded episodes (only remove them from the queue, but that does not delete the download)

No, I use the Delete After Playing option for all my Subscriptions except one. Working fine as explained elsewhere in the forum, and suits me just fine.

It did take me a while to figure the flow, but I have figured out how to use the tools at hand to suit my needs.

Pushing for changes that enhance and improve the user experience should always be welcome and open for discussion. Keep an open mind.

I have recently discovered and started using AntennaPod after extended usage of Podcast Addict and PocketCasts, both resulting in me looking for a replacement for one reason or another.

I confess that I am still learning the nuances of AntennaPod’s usage flow but I think that the feature I am missing is worth discussing.

One feature that I find myself missing is the ability to mark an episode as Archived vs Played. This may seem like a distinction without a difference to some, but I would like to be able to distinguish between episodes that I have listened to and those episodes that I just wish to remove from episodes currently available for listening.

I also like to be able to archive episodes based on their age and the total number of episodes currently available (not archived) for listening. Archived episodes could then be removed from view via a filter same as Played/Not played.

What are the chances that this capability could be added to AntennaPod?

High. We already have that on the list since years. However, so far, nobody has spent the time to implement it (remember that AntennaPod is developed by volunteers in our free time)
