Hey, I am just done with the app translation and now I want to translate the app screenshots to Hindi. Can you please help with that?
Hi, I think I can help with that. If the component is translated on weblate then is only a case of generating the images.
Then, there is a repo for generating the images, I’ve never done it, but if you translated everything on weblate, I can try to do it.
Hey, I was actually requesting if the component can be added to Weblate. I will translate one someone adds the component.
I’ve just created the component for you. Just let me know if you need anything else.
Regards,
Iago
@delthia I have done the translations. Can you generate the images?
Yes. I have to set things up, so give me a couple of days and I’ll let you know when it is done.
Following up on this, our default font (Sarabun) doesn’t support Devanagari scripture (it only has Latin and Thai scripts). I looked for scripts with a similar feel, and I would propose ‘Hind’. It has a modern and clean feel. The shirorekha (horizontal line connecting the characters) are really clean as well, while in most fonts there is some level of squiggles.
It is created by Indian Type Foundry and is released under the Open Font License (OFL). It supports 5 weights.
An alternative would be ‘Google Sans’, also released under OFL. I like it slightly less because it feels a bit less clean. It supports ‘only’ 4 weights, but on the upside it has italics. And, a big plus: it is available in many scripts (e.g. Hebrew, Cyrillic, Greek, etc), so we’d be done with a single font for many languages (increasing consistency and maintenance simplicity).
Any preference @konnichiwa (in terms of style, readability), @delthia & @ByteHamster (in terms of technical approach; number of fonts)?
I don’t think I have an opinion here. The screenshots only need semi-bold, not italic
Fair enough, but I was thinking also about the website. If it becomes available in Hindi, and we have some text in italics… (and similar for the other scripts; it’s no problem if we have multiple fonts?)
I was thinking about using Noto Sans because they’d support most of the scripts we’d need, so your suggestion of Google Sans fits in that line.
Otherwise, having a different font wouldn’t be too much of a problem once you’ve them all set up, so if you prefer having a better looking font, that isn’t an issue in my opinion.
Google Sans might be a bit boring because it is used so much everywhere
They both look same to me ![]()
Ok, then let’s go for Hind for now, and then we can see if we can find other nice fonts for other scripts when the time comes.
Ok, I’ll generate the screenshots as soon as I can then.
