After years of using Pocket Casts, I switched to AntennaPod. I’m happy with it, but what’s written in this thread is what bothers me the most. Sometimes I don’t listen to a podcast until the end (phone, sleeping… or whatever other reason) but the podcast keeps playing and disappears from the queue. I would like to be able to decide when to delete it (just like in Pocket Casts).
Another thing is that I miss the forward and back buttons on the bar at the bottom when a podcast is playing. Now there is only a play button. The only way to go forward or backward is to click on this bar, use forward and back, and then go back again.
I have “never delete” selected, but they always get deleted. The option doesn’t seem to be working. I’ve tried globally, and for each podcast individually, but they still get deleted.
Hi, just wanted to add my support for implementing this option that’s the one I miss the most from other podcast apps. It seems crazy to me that so many in the beginning of the thread were debating/not understanding the use for it when it seems pretty obvious and every other podcast app I tried has it.
Anyway, it would be great to not have to go in playback history and re sort my queue each time I missed the end of an episode !
How are you not tired of misrepresenting this for a year and a half and still not reading people’s most basic points about why this creates unnecessary friction, sheesh. Go back up the thread for once instead of just talking down to people.
Antenna pod would be perfect if it allowed this. Other podcast apps have this feature and I don’t understand why with all the options and features of Antenna pod, keeping played episodes in the queue is somehow offensive or impossible. I’m not talking about deleting the file after playing; I’m talking about the episodes staying in the queue after playing them. I don’t want to have to go into Playback History to re-add shows back to the queue. Every day I do that that with 6-10 random podcasts that could have just remained in the queue. I realize not everyone has a need to do this but I don’t see what’s so absurd about it, especially considering that functionality exists as a toggle in other apps.
I’d really appreciate this feature as well. Specifically, to have episodes remain in the queue after they’ve finished playing. There seems to be some miscommunication in this thread, with some people referring to deletion/removal from the queue and others seemingly referring to deletion of the file from the phone. Currently, I have my downloads set not to automatically delete (the file) when they finish playing, but there currently is no option to stop them from being removed from the queue.
Yes, I can go to playback history and move things back into my queue, but it’s kind of a pain to do that all the time. I fall asleep through multiple episodes of things frequently, and am also easily distracted…
The pushback against this simple request is frankly astounding. I had hoped this would have been resolved by now, but 2 years of devs basically saying “use another app if you want this one simple toggle” really sours what is otherwise a great project.
Following the sleep-timer-scoped proposal in reply #7, I implemented this option and opened a pull request:
With “Keep completed episodes” enabled, episodes that complete while the sleep timer is active stay in the queue, and downloaded episode files are not automatically deleted. Playback outside the sleep timer and the existing manual deletion behaviour remain unchanged.
I tested both the enabled and disabled behaviour on a physical device. Feedback on the scope or wording would be welcome.
I’m still requesting an option to prevent played files from being deleted from the queue or my phone. It could simply be that there are podcasts I’ve been distracted by, or that I need to listen to twice because their content is dense and difficult to understand, like some science podcasts. I don’t understand why it’s so confusing and why it was necessary to implement this feature just for the timer.
The option is there, but it doesn’t work. So there’s no more confusion and no reason to complain that so many people can use App Store without the automatic deletion function. What else is it for?
Okay, well, since I’m still getting emailed about this ancient request: That doesn’t meet the scope of this issue at all. Never have a use for the Sleep function. As you said, this was randomly added in by @keunes . I’d like to second @Nucleorion for a general setting that actually solves the issue both for everyone here and any hypothetical person wanting it for the Sleep setting.
This honestly just feels convoluted and more confusing when it fails to do what would be the more commonly desired behaviour.
I don’t understand why the thread is being closed when the issue is still relevant. What a nuisance and what a hindrance that now we have to open a new thread, making everything even more complicated.
It turns out the feature has been implemented. But now the episodes aren’t deleted from the device, yes, but they are deleted from the queue, so they remain forgotten in the downloads folder. That doesn’t solve the problem. Please, what we want is for them not to be deleted from anywhere, and we want to manually delete them from the queue. That’s what the initial message said. I hope this is clear, and thank you for listening to our request. And congratulations on the app.
This is the main missing feature that made me stop using Antennapod. I see the thread from 2024 and was hoping there would be a toggle for this by now.
This has been a point that I have thought about for a few years. I have a feeling that this functionality has change since the pre-beta times, maybe since 3.8 or so.
In the Queue, or in a Subscription, let me Favourite an Episode to never have it deleted. A download from a Favourated Subscription or a podcast manually Favourated in the Queue should NEVER be deleted, removed from the queue or anything. Call it pinned or protected or whatever, favourited podcasts should NEVER be deleted.
Remember that AntennaPod is developed by volunteers and the implementation of any feature request depends on those volunteers’ time and personal interest in the functionality.
There is already an option to prevent played episode files from being deleted.
The widely requested change is that, if you choose not to delete the file, the episode should also remain in the queue. Otherwise, the file stays on the device taking up storage space, but disappears from the queue, so it is easy to forget that it is still there.
If some users prefer finished episodes to be removed from the queue while keeping the downloaded file, that could be added alongside the existing “Delete after playing” option, for example:
“Remove from queue but keep the file.”
Then the behavior would be:
If “Delete after playing” is not enabled, the episode stays in the queue and the file is kept.
If “Remove from queue but keep the file” is enabled, the episode is removed from the queue but the file is kept — which is basically what currently happens when “Delete after playing” is disabled.
I think this would be a way to implement this much-requested feature without taking anything away from users who prefer the current behavior.
