Automatically add to queue

App version: 3.0.2 (Google Play)

Problem you may be having, or feature you want: There’s a daily podcast that I listen to every morning while driving to work, using Android Auto. At the moment, I have to select the podcast and then the newest episode, which can be annoying and a little distracting while driving. Instead, in Android Auto, it’s much easier to play the queue (it’s just one touch). I would like a podcast setting that, as soon as a new episode for that podcast appears, automatically adds it to the queue.

I don’t download episodes, I always use streaming, and I’d like to keep it this way. Also I don’t use the Inbox feature (to be honest I’ve never quite understood its purpose), is it useful for my request?

Suggested solution: see above: “automatically add every new episode to the queue for this podcast” option (not just about every podcast I subscribe to, like the Inbox -I guess?-, it has to be set for each podcast individually)

But you could just select the option to “add downloaded episodes to the queue”

But why? You don’t save data whether you stream or download. No difference

It may be that there isn’t enough space available on the device to download the episodes hence why streaming is always used.

I can potentially see myself using such a feature if it existed.

Yes I would love this feature. There are couple of daily post casts at I ALWAYS want in my queue (and at the top)

The ideal way of doing this, to me at least, would be to have it work like the old SmartPlay feature in BeyondPod. It had an option in each feed to automatically add the newest or oldest episode to the top or bottom of the playlist/queue. It was absolutely perfect.

I was a huge fan of that feature from BeyondPod.

Settings > Downloads > New episodes action > Add to queue

It’s under the Downloads section but it will not be downloaded if you disable Automatic Download (right under it). If you want it queued “as soon as a new episode for that podcast appears”, or at least within the hour, set Refresh podcasts (right above it) to Every hour.

Thanks! I have a few podcasts I’d like to do this for. So what you do is go to the podcast itself and click the settings gear button. At the next screen you may have to scroll down but you’ll see “New episodes action”. Just set it for each episode to add to queue.

I can’t seem to figure this out. So I decided that there are about 10-15 pods I listen to that no matter what I will always enqueue and listen to. I don’t want to have to add to queue/download each time, I’d rather that for these pods any time an episode is available it is added to the queue automatically. So I went in to the settings for each one of those podcasts and changed new episode behavior to add to queue. That worked. But I noticed they weren’t downloading automatically. Easy enough, just go turn auto-download on, which worked, but now any time an episode is available from any one of the hundred or so shows I’m subscribed to, they are all immediately downloaded and added to queue. This would be a nightmare.

So I see an option in each podcast’s settings that shows “exclude from auto-download”, which I think would work, but is there any way I won’t have to change that setting for 80 or so shows? Or is there a way to toggle this off globally and just turn it on for the shows I want it for? I can’t see myself switching this off for every show. And I wouldn’t necessarily have a problem streaming the episodes but Antennapod has some sort of bug when playback is streaming and it makes trying to listen to a podcast a horrible experience. There are a couple recent threads about the issue.

On subscriptions screen (which list all subscriptions) you can multi select subscriptions (long press one subscription to pop up a context menu) and disable auto downloading for selected subscriptions.

The enqueue/download flowchart seems to be all reversed (see How to auto-download queued episodes?). It should be:

Manual/auto enqueue

Auto-download enqueued episodes (if set to)

The way it’s set up today the assumption seems to be that users only listen to episodes published after they subscribe to a podcast.

I see this feature would be useful for other users too.

I tried doing what Tagarela_Midia suggests here: I went to the settings for the specific podcast I listen to daily and then set New episodes action > Add to queue

On Monday morning, when a new episode is published, I’ll see if it works.

My goal is: the episode will NOT be downloaded as I prefer streaming, but it will be added to my queue without me having to do anything manually. Once I’ve listened to it, it will disappear from the queue. No other episode for other podcasts will be affected in any way.

Thank you! This was a weird, roundabout way of doing it but it looks like it worked. I have 136 podcasts so selecting every single one I didn’t want to auto download was going to suck, but there was a select all button and I ended up using that and unselecting the ones I wanted to auto-download. Once I did that I just clicked the edit pencil on the bottom right and the option for auto-download was right there. Nice.

I’m sure it’ll work for you because I am doing this exact thing, but I needed the extra step of the download. So what you described vs what you’re expecting are going to be the same. Good luck!

It saves space. I don’t finish every podcast to the last second, so Auto delete never works, my phone fills up and I have to manually delete everything. When I used Google podcast, nothing is downloaded, everything is streamed and everything was added to the queue so I didn’t have to Fumble with my phone while I was driving. These apps should be optimized for car use, it’s not 1998

Go to Settings → Playback → Smart mark as played
Just like you I don’t play every podcast till the end so for my use case I selected “mark as played” even if I still have 2 minutes left.

The method described here Automatically add to queue - #7 by Tagarela_Midia worked for my purposes: this morning episode got added to the queue (at the bottom) but not downloaded.

If you want new episodes downloaded and enqueued, you need to:

  1. Turn on Automatic download under Settings > Downloads
  2. Turn on Enqueue downloaded under Settings > Playback
  3. Set New episodes action under Settings > Downloads back to Add to inbox

Not very intuitive, I reckon, just bc the logic of what should be a Download enqueued episodes setting is reversed to Enqueue downloaded episodes.

To be fair it’s what default are set to
But I agree it would be more logical to be able to trigger downloading when adding to queue.
